NEARI Training Center offers programs for professionals who work with high-risk youth in residential, day and public school settings and after-school programs. Training programs address issues of behavior management, intervention, and brain-based learning and counseling.

The cornerstone of the training program is a 10-day certificate program (syllabus) for professionals working with children and youth with sexual behavior problems.

OVERVIEW

Research over the past twenty years has provided dramatic insight into the understanding of sexually aggressive behavior. The number of specialized treatment programs responding to this behavior has increased, as has the number of practitioners faced with the task of providing successful interventions. The need for comprehensive sex offense-specific training, clinical supervision, consultation, program evaluation and credentialing have also increased. The Academic Certificate Program for the Treatment of Youthful Sexual Aggression is designed to meet this need.

This Certificate Program is committed to creating and providing practical training, consultation and evaluation based upon findings at the leading edge of research and organized through the following assumptions and beliefs:

• Successful community response requires a comprehensive, competency-based continuum of care that includes correctional facilities, residential treatment centers, group homes, alternative living settings, day treatment programs, outpatient and intensive home-based services.
• New research findings and treatment techniques should guide diagnosis and treatment of sexually abusive youth.
• Treatment requires an interdisciplinary approach that integrates the contributions of all affiliated professions and follows guidelines outlined in both the National Task Force Report on Juvenile Sexual Offending and by the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers (ATSA).

The Academic Certificate Program provides intensive course work equivalent to a university curricula. In addition to 60 direct contact hours of training, the curricula provides a competency-based process for evaluating clinical skills and abilities. Participants use textbooks representing current research in the field to facilitate their learning process.

The Academic Certificate Program has been recognized and accepted as part of state credentialing requirements and as elective coursework in a variety of graduate programs for social work, psychology, and marriage and family therapy.

All participants engage in a collaborative learning experience designed to meet the unique goals of each service provider. Personnel from a variety of disciplines are challenged to integrate material into the context of their work setting and job duties. Participants are offered an exceptional opportunity to collaborate with colleagues from around the United States and visitors from foreign countries. The academic experience is enhanced by the rich diversity of participants who share a wide range of experience in a variety of treatment settings.

The Academic Certificate Program addresses the need to:

• Develop and implement specialized treatment programs that fit the risk and functioning levels of each youth.
• Provide services to adolescents who exhibit problems with sexual aggression.
• Understand the social context of the abuse.
• Respect the cultural diversity of adolescents and families.
• Engage each client in the therapeutic process.
• Utilize a multi-systems approach that includes public and private social and mental health services.
• Coordinate treatment within the criminal justice system.
• Provide interventions that meet the intellectual level of each client.
• Conduct comprehensive, ongoing assessment.
• Provide family life education.
• Recognize the influence of past trauma.
• Eliminate patterns of violence and sexual abuse.
• Create a detailed plan for continued success.
• Develop each youth's social support network.
• Enhance affect regulation.
• Teach each youth self-management techniques.
• Network among professionals providing services to these individuals and families.
• Address each treatment provider's need for self-care when working with this population.

This program is limited to 25 participants.

Cost: $1,600.00, which includes tuition and all textbooks and materials necessary to complete the course. Please arrange for your own accomodations.
