Description
Brain-based teaching is a new and rapidly growing field that is improving classroom practice. This course introduces: 1) important research-based principles about how the brain learns best and 2) related brain-based strategies for designing effective learning activities in schools, residential programs, counseling settings, and after-school programs. This course will be helpful for educators, counselors, and child care providers who need to create and teach knowledge and skills to elementary, middle, and high school-aged students.
Workshop Objectives
In this course, you will:
- Learn how the human brain functions and why teaching strategies need to address how children and youth learn best
- Learn about the principles of brain-based learning and teaching
- Become familiar with the three brain-based goals of quality teaching/programming
- Create brain-based strategies for building more effective learning activities
About the Author(s)
Together with Steve Bengis, ED.D., L.C.S.W., Dr. Cuninggim founded and directs the New England Adolescent Research Institute, Inc. (NEARI) in Holyoke, MA. NEARI administers: The Brain-Based Resource Center; The NEARI School, a day school that provides special education services to emotionally disturbed, developmentally delayed, learning disabled, and behaviorally disordered youth; Jump-Start, an early intervention after-school program for at-risk youth; The NEARI Press, a publishing house specializing in education and intervention with "at-risk youth"; and a training and consulting center. Dr. Cuninggim holds a doctorate in education from the University of Massachusetts, a Master of Arts in Teaching from the University of Chicago, and a Master of Social Work from the University of Connecticut. Dr. Cuninggim has worked as a college instructor, a consultant and trainer, and a therapist.
